Nicaragua is home to nienteen volcanoes, each with their particular character and landscape. On Isla Ometepe, an island formed by two volcanoes rising out of Central America’s largest freshwater lake, you can hike lush cloud forests to a the rim of a inactive volcano Maderas with a crater lake, or through tropical forest to the ash-covered peaks of the active stratovolcano, Concepción. For contrast, Masaya is composed of a nested set of calderas and craters.
